.999999(repeating) is equal to 1. Don't Believe me?

1.

.999999 (repeating) x 10 = 9.999999 (repeating)

9.999999 (repeating) - .999999 (repeating) = 9

We then have: 10y - y = 9

Solve for y: y = 1

2.

1/3 = .3333333(repeating)

2/3= .6666666(repeating)

Now you add those together.

1/3 + 2/3 = 1

.333333(repeating) + .666666 (repeating)= .9999999 (repeating)

Therefore one can finally deduce that

.99999999 (repeating) = 1.

I like method 1, it not only involves subtraction of an expression without any reason, but also involves randomly putting algebraic variables in the equation just for the hell of it lol.

Yes...yes...old stuff. My algebra teacher (Damn him for retiring) showed my class that. Good stuff.

There's also a mathimatical theory that 2=3... ^^ I found it quite amusing.

I found a theory that said that you could never ever get to point B from point A because there will always be space between you and point B. He says, you get half way there, then you have to go half again, then half again, until you can't go halfway anymore.

Theory says that you can keep splitting something in half forever because you can't reach the end. There will always be another half to cut away.

Sorry if it didn't make sense. If it doesn't make sense to you, I'll repost later.

I heard of this before. Its based on the thought of space being infinity small and big. Which where that halves come from. If you always split things in half infinitly, you would need infinite energy just to move through infinite space. By doing some complex math that was done in the recent past. One would fingure out that space can't be infinite.

But it does equal one by useing fractions and such.

A empty vaccum may just be empty to us, but on a heavy scale it must have meaning. Of cource math gets more complex when you add "false vaccums" and peruspheres and open universes. Laughing

You know the number I like? I forget who made it, but its the numbers of "Beauty".

1,2,3,5,8,13,21,34

You can find this pattern in a flower. Itsnt that cool!! Very Happy

I understand that zemeon, however, you're not only limited to cutting the space in half. I know it invariably happens, but if you have a fixed point, why can't you be right on top of that fixed point. Move from it, to another fixed point? I don't know, that one doesn't seem sound to me.

*Edit- That didn't really explain it any better to me tankdown.

One of the problems is that its based on Newtonian like theories that space is absolut. Which now and days we now think of space simply being a seperate energy from us. But like everything in this unviersal, its often connected one way or after. Even if we can't affect space directly, gravity still can, from Einsteins theories.

Anyone up for connect the dots? Smile

i just watched a movie about quantum theory and such in chemistry, it kind of reminded me of this problem, because they are always trying to prove something that wouldnt normally make sense.

Here's a proof that 2=1.

My Proof wrote:
start with two equal values: x=y
multiply by x: x^2 = xy
subtract the square of y: (x^2) - (y^2) = xy-(y^2)
factor: (x+y)(x-y) = y(x-y)
Since we have to identical terms on either side, we can drop the equal term: x+y = y
Substitute in a single numer for x and y, such as 1: 1+1 = 1

And there you have it, proof that one plus one (two) equals one.

Finally someone looking up proof for themselves. You guys are simply arranging equations and adding random steps in, in order to suit your theory. Thank you mattz for using your brain.

.999999=.999999. 1=1. And 2=2. Simple math.

lol, but i am pretty sure my second method doesnt involve an error like dividing by zero. Smile
